Clean Power and Net-Zero: What’s Next for the UK?
Clean Power by 2030: Can the UK Deliver?
The UK’s energy transition faces mounting urgency, shaped by ambitious short and medium-term targets. By 2030, the government aims to decarbonise electricity generation entirely; while the 2035 pledge to reduce emissions by 81% from 1990 levels, demands a holistic transformation of energy systems. These objectives are unfolding against a backdrop of rising costs for offshore wind, constraints on onshore development and the pressing need to modernise grid infrastructure to support variable renewables.
To deliver on these ambitions, the UK must navigate a host of interconnected challenges. The electricity market’s current pricing structure is under scrutiny as policymakers work to incentivise investment, while maintaining affordability. Beyond the power sector, achieving deeper decarbonisation by 2035 will require scaling technologies such as hydrogen, carbon capture and storage and biomethane. Simultaneously, demand-side innovations – ranging from electrification of heating and transport to behavioural shifts and circular economic practices– will be critical to reducing consumption sustainability.
This Financial Times briefing, in partnership with DNV, will examine the pivotal steps required to meet the UK’s clean energy and emissions goals. Bringing together policymakers, industry leaders and experts, the event will address strategies for unlocking investment, strengthening energy security and building a resilient, low-carbon energy system that balances ambition with practicality.
